Establishing Athens, Ohio’s Color Palette

As as important part of The Essence of Athens planning process, the city decided to set itself apart from other communities in Ohio and the U.S. by embracing its big personality and amplifying its uniqueness through special choices for “Athens-centric” colors. The city will celebrate its “whimsical” and “boisterous” traits by encouraging colors that define the bold, soulful spirit of Athens. As a result, the city’s desire for bright colors will set the tone for future development and rehab projects. Color is a big part of The Essence of Athens Plan’s mission to provide a rare Athens experience that will attract more residents, students (to Ohio University), businesses, and tourists. Here are a few examples of what will be encouraged:

Bright, bold, colors such as this unusual green contrast sharply from many competing Ohio communities that emphasize dull colors such as tan, brown, and beige. Athens will set itself apart by showcasing its artisan culture with artisan colors.

Athens is playful, whimsical, hopeful, enthusiastic, boisterous, and it tests boundaries. Bold colors are necessary to make its landscape match its culture.

People in Athens are original, intellectually curious, filled with creative ingenuity, and forward-looking. Now its building colors are too.

Few elements of placemaking are as important as color, and Athens has decided to shine brighter than the rest with its whimsical and boisterous hues. An official color palette is an important part of The Essence of Athens Plan, and it will be presented to the Athens City Council in the coming months. Stay tuned and check back for progress!
