Designing Local Travel Tips: National Parks
One of the best parts about travel is becoming immersed in a new environment. The new environment can involve food, music, dance, architecture, sounds, sites, and much more.
Since its founding over 100-years ago, the National Park Service has been working to preserve what makes communities great.
When most Americans think of a National Park, they think of battlefields or Old Faithful at Yellowstone. National Park Sites are diverse and represent different cultures, landscapes, and each tell a story differently.
We wanted to give you a few reasons to visit a NPS site this year!
- Fun For Kids! Whether your kid likes video games or nature, there is something for them at a National Park. National Park visitor centers have tapped into the Pokemon Go craze and you can battle in a gym or catch a new Pokemon for your collection. The Pokemon reflect the type of park you are visiting; if you visit Mammoth Cave, you can catch bat Pokemon. National Park sites are already well known for their Junior Ranger program. Ask for a Junior Ranger packet, and your kid will be able to complete assignments to receive a Junior Ranger badge for that National Park. The Junior Ranger packets hone in on key aspects of each individual parks to ensure your kid connects to the significance of the area.
- Hike For Health! Visit a National Park and participate in their hike for health challenges to meet your fitness goals. National Park trails allow you to diversify your exercise routine with new scenery, and through different physical challenges – hiking, spelunking, kayaking, etc. Your physical fitness can even earn you an exclusive pin!
- Learn Some Dance Moves! Since the early 1900s, traditional Navajo Hoop Dancers have performed at the Grand Canyon National Park. At Chemizal National Memorial, belly dancers perform at special events. If dance is “your thing” watch a performance at one of the unique settings provided by a National Park.
- Treat Yo’ Self! After a day of catching Pokemon, hiking, and learning… you deserve to relax. Camping is not for everyone, but do not worry! Many National Park sites offer one of a kind lodging opportunities. Consider a romantic getaway at one of the historic hotels and fine dining at their restaurants. The lodges provide scenic views, distinctive interior design, and a way to step back in time. These historic lodges offer discounts with your National Trust for Historic Preservation membership.
