NEXT: Merriam, Kansas Public Art Administration
Designing Local will assist the City of Merriam, Kansas in selecting artists for permanent outdoor public artas part of the new Merriam Community Center project. The total budget for public art is $300,000.00 with a target completion of 2020.
In September of 2017, Merriam voters approved a bond initiative to build a new community center, including indoor and outdoor aquatics, replacing an aging aquatic center and existing community center. The new community center will feature a variety of amenities including indoor and outdoor aquatics, fitness and recreation areas, and community gathering space. A key feature of the building design is an outdoor plaza that will connect the community center, a parking structure, and a library. The selected artworks will be a key element of creating a unique and special place in the heart of Merriam.
