Plain City Completes ‘Survey on the Future’
To prepare for their comprehensive plan update, the Village of Plain City made the strategic decision to better understand theviews of its residents and visitors through a comprehensive public input effort. The ‘Survey on the Future’ was completed by over 1000 village residents, visitors, and residents of the greater Plain City area. There was a 48% increase in responses compared to the previous survey that was done as part of the 2003 Comprehensive Plan.
The vast majority of surveys were completed online via a survey tool with additional in person opportunities given at the Village of Plain City offices and the Plain City Public Library. Reminders were distributed via social media, email, local newspapers, fliers, door tags and cards distributed during the 4th of July Parade.
THE MORE THINGS CHANGE
Each category of respondents was given a different series of questions. Residents were asked the most in depth questions and visitors the least. Based on the results of the survey, Village leaders now have a better window into the views of residents and other who care about the future of Plain City.
The survey was constructed so that many of the questions from the original survey were repeated in order to determine how much (or how little) the views of residents have changed over the past 13 years. For example, though the demographics of survey respondents changed [more single person households, less 5+ person households] many of the opinions did not [friendly neighbors, good schools, and safety were ranked in the top three of ‘What makes a good community?” in both surveys].
THE FOUNDATION OF THINGS TO COME
The unprecedented public response to the ‘Survey on the Future’ has created a foundation for the Village to pursue its future comprehensive plan effort. By establishing from the very beginning that the comprehensive plan will be shaped by the voices of Plain City residents the Village has ensured that is results will be embraced by its residents.
